Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe Toothache

Persistent, severe tooth pain may indicate infection or advanced decay. Until you can see us, rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain medication as directed, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If you’ve broken or chipped a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces and bring them to your appointment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention for the best chance of saving it. Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root) and gently rinse it with water if dirty (don’t scrub). Try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gums. See us within 30-60 minutes for the best outcome.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown falls out, apply clove oil to the sensitive area for temporary pain relief. If you have the crown, you can temporarily reattach it using dental cement from a drugstore. Avoid chewing on that side until treatment.

Abscess or Infection

Dental infections can be serious and may require urgent treatment. Rinse with mild salt water several times a day, take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed, and apply cold compresses for swelling. Seek immediate care, as dental infections can spread.

Soft Tissue Injuries

For cuts, bites, or tears to the lips, cheeks, mouth, and tongue, rinse with warm salt water and apply pressure with gauze or tea bag for bleeding. Use cold compresses for swelling and seek immediate care for severe bleeding that doesn’t stop.

After-Hours Emergencies

If you experience a dental emergency outside our regular office hours:

  • Call our office at (707) 542-1026 and follow the instructions for emergency care
  • If you cannot reach us and are experiencing severe pain, swelling, or bleeding, go to your nearest emergency room

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Many dental emergencies can be prevented through regular dental checkups and cleanings. Wearing mouthguards during sports activities is essential for protecting your teeth. We also recommend avoiding chewing ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candies, never using your teeth as tools to open packages, and addressing dental issues promptly before they become emergencies.
